In admiration of google

This site caught my attention when I was doing my post graduation. If we had any research to do, this was the first choice for us and we were rarely disappointed. It never bothered us that we weren’t even venturing to try out other search sites. Something about this site jelled with us and that’s it. We even thought of adding a postscript to our degrees – ‘Credit for the successful completion of this post graduate program goes to google.com’!!

The massive interest in this site led me to closely follow anything in the news about google and as a result of that have gathered tons of information about this hugely innovative company and its brilliant founders. The way they changed the rules of the mailing game by initially offering 1 GB of free space (imagine, we were so much used to having 5 – 6 MB from yahoo that 1 GB seemed like manna from heaven) and then increased it to 2 GB making everyone else in the industry to do the same; the way their IPO debuted at $85 and within a year zoomed to $300; the way they introduced google desktop search ahead of Microsoft; they way they positioned themselves in the marketplace as the preferred workplace for geeks; the way they went on continuously innovating by offering new products left, right and center like google talk, google blog search, picasa, froogle, google maps, google video etc; Simply amazing!

This company has been consistently rewriting rules and setting new standards for its competitors and the best part is that their competitors have to follow them! No choice, if they have to survive! Simply put, google has become synonymous with creativity and innovation.

We can be sure of one thing though. As their mission is to ‘organize the world’s information’, exciting things lie ahead of us in the future. The only real danger that I foresee for google is this: In their extreme zealousness to organize the world’s information, they might cross boundaries and trespass on sensitive copyright and user privacy related issues. If they keep a close watch on this aspect and see to it they stick well within boundaries, I guess that these kind of posts filled with lavish praise will become quite common.

For people wishing to know the next big thing from google, the best place is google labs. Especially, look out for google suggest. I simply love it! And if you want to gain some more insight into their work culture, google blog is a good place. And yes for some interesting facts about google, have a look at this link. Happy googling!
